You don't have to do all of this at once, only half is due next class (but feel free to get it all done if you can). Your notes should include your thoughts on the topic.
Homework Due on Monday and Tuesday:
- Using the website above, complete the following tasks (either on binder paper or you can type and print out):
- Pick 7 (seven) of the 10 issues and write a short summary of each and how it affects federalism. By this I mean, what do the states want from the federal government, and why is there so much activity at the state level on these? The article asks "What role will states play? How much flexibility will legislatures (state legislatures) have? Will state laws be pre-empted? If states are given more responsibility, will funding accompany it? " Please also look up and define "pre-emption". All these questions do NOT have to answered for each issue. Just pick seven and summarize why they are the top federalism issues of 2018. Also be prepared to answer if you think the federal government should be more or less involved in this issue.
- You can either print and annotate the article on Federalism (below), or read on your computer and take notes on a separate piece of paper. Either way, know the evolution of Federalism and be prepared to discuss the pros and cons of having a federal system.
- Below is a link to the article on-line and as a PDFwww.cengage.com/politicalscience/book_content/0547216386_miroff/primary_sources/assets/hmps_am_fed_past_pres.html
